Physical Statistics

Bofin are an intelligent race of herbivores, though some are known to eat fish or meat. Humanoid in form, they are odd-toed ungulates despite a passing resemblance to terran bovines. They possess two pairs of horns; one small set at the forehead and facing forward, the other above the ears and angled to the sides and forward. The second set of horns is considerably larger. Bofin also possess a thick plate of bone stretched between all four of their horns, serving to absorb impact when used to headbutt others. The large horns above their ears also serve to protect their long and sensitive ears when pushing through branches or briars.
Bofin arms are long for their frames, to the point their fingertips can easily touch their knees with almost no bending required. Despite the thick appearance of their hands and nails, their fingers are quite dextrous. The thick nails are used for aid in digging and tearing through the bark of roots.
Nearly all bofin possess long, flexible tails covered in short fur, with a tuft of longer hair beginning somewhere around the last third. These tails are not prehensile, but do have enough motor control to manipulate their surroundings with some rough success. Other than their scalp, forearms, tails, and legs below the thighs, bofin are entirely hairless, though explanation as to why is difficult to place.

Bofin eyes are curious, in that their pupils form a spiral shape. This trait is apparently unique to them, even on their home planet. However odd their eyes are, they possess highly acute color detection, and within the yellow to cyan (~510-~610 THz) spectrum, can pick up differences in due as little as 0.03 THz. There have also been tundra-acclimated bofin capable of seeing ultraviolet light.

Diet

Bofin teeth are more reminescent of those of omnivores. Their molars and incisors will replace themselves constantly, however, they will only ever have two sets of canine teeth.
(daily intake in kCal (females 1,800~2,000; halfs 2,800~3,200; males 4,500~4,800); requirements (herbivorous, can eat meat and insects); variety (highest naturally evolved range of safe foods without enzypi))

Lifecycle

Sexes: Bofin are functionally hermaphroditic, but have an actual sex determined by several chromosomes, leading to sex being on a sliding scale of sorts, and so are classified by the number of x chromosomes they possess; 6x, 5x, 4x, 3x, 2x, and 1x. 0x bofin appear to be unable to properly form.

The most common are "female" bofin, meaning those with 4, 5, or 6 x chromosomes. Female bofin are short compared to lielum (homo sapiens), usually ranging between 140cm to 150cm, with 6x and 5x being on the lower end, and 4x on the taller side. Female bofin have light frames, and are unusually slender if compared to a female lielum of the same height.
Female bofin express mammary growth and display even when not nursing, in a manner similar to lielum, though possessing two pairs of breasts in rows on their chest. Their hips are proportionately wider than lielum females due to the musculature required to support their ungulate legs. Female bofin have smaller horns, and usually trend toward being more aggressive overall.

Afterward in occurrence are halfway, or "half" bofin, which are those with 2 or 3 x chromosomes. Half bofin are significantly taller than females, by 30–40 per cent on average, and have considerably more muscle mass to bring their overall weight to roughly twice that of an equivalent female. Half bofin also possess breasts, though proportionately smaller than those of female bofin. Half bofin also have a more coarse and thicker fur as a protective measure.

The rarest are male bofin, which occur only with a single x chromosome. Despite being twice the mass of halfs, they are known for being rather docile. They do not possess breasts, and their horns are often more than three times the length of an equivalent half's horns. Males also possess thicker and longer tails, and longer fur with similar qualities to those of halfs.

Population and nations

Approximate number of nations or factions on the home world: The bofin have 60 recognized country-states, with roughly 30,000 separate tribes within.
Ethnicities, by "Quarter": (This is not an extensive list, merely a guide to the major ethnicities and their differences.)
Central Quarter; Bofin of the Central Valley are notable for their thick, curly hair and fur. They usually possess curved side-horns, and have larger ears than most. Darker skin is most common in the central valley, being paired with fairer hair in the blondes, reds, and greens.

  • Okoka'ginfje: The northern portion of the central valley is home to many hills, and the Ginfje bofin make their home in these dry lands and mountains bordering the west quarter. With long legs and dainty hooves, these bofin are noted for their balance, and are typically a bit on the short side. Their fur grows long, and resembles a sheep's fleece, helping to protect them from the cold weather and unrelenting sunlight and winds.
  • Okoka'isken: The southern-most portion of the central valley is covered in thick rainforest, and heavy rain fall is common. Isken bofin tend to be tall, and their fur and hair thick, but short. Green is the most common hair color of the Isken, and their skin and horns are a distinctive reddish color.
  • Okoka'zimjesh: Bofin who have settled along the southern side of Lake Jokoki and along the Okoka river where the land is flat and green from the rainfall that doesn't reach the Isken forests. Zimjesh bofin have striking golden skin, horns, and even flesh; this is thought to come from the heavy consumption of a special breed of beetle found only in the Zimjesh plains that these bofin cultivate.

Eastern Quarter; The eastern quarter is home to a wide variety of bofin, despite being the smallest of the geographic regions.

  • Salmat: The bofin within the Salmat forests, primarily in the central portion of the Eastern Quarter. These bofin are adapted for the temperate forests, and are expert climbers. Salmat bofin are known for their throwing skills, which, along with their knowledge of their home terrain and skill at utilizing cover, is how they have managed to remain distinct from the Salmigi and Tampera, despite constant invasions.
  • Salmigi: The bofin living in the drylands along the mountains and south of the Salmat forest. These bofin have sparse and short fur, with typically black, straight hair and dark keratin (horns and hooves). Militaristic, Salmigi bofin have bred themselves to be fairly muscular and wiry.
  • Tampera: Consummate sailors, the Tampera bofin have settled all along the coasts of the eastern quarter, from the base of Bird's Beak all the way north and into the central quartor. There are three distinct phenotypes; Oskort, with distinct red eyes and hooves, their horns are unusually white; Ninshiet, with keratin that's dark and black, they produce oils that help repel water; and Gigora, with brown hooves and horns being common and red hair. Tamera actually comes from a word meaning "salt drinker", and these bofin can safely consume larger amounts of salt, as well fish.
  • Topori/Islanders: Not really a single group, these are bofin living on the various islands along the southern coast of the eastern quarter, below Bird's Beak. Noted mostly for their distinct, nearly black, skin, tribes are usually distinguished by keratin colors. Includes the Salma-igranst, Nadjer-igranst, and the G'onnon'tar, along with the Topori themselves.
  • Warawarr: The isolationist Warawarr dwell within the southernmost forests of the Eastern Quarter. Unlike the temperate forests of the Salmat, the Waraw forests are rainforests, and exceedingly hot and humid. Warawarr bofin possess similar oils to the Ninshiet bofin, though they otherwise resemble Salmigi bofin.

Northern Quarter: North of the Blackrock river, with its heavy iron deposits, the bofin of this region are hearty and adapted to life in the green hills and plains.

  • Choks: The bofin who live along the blackrock river. Though primarily its northern shore, they also live along the southern banks. Among these bofin, bi-colored hair and fur are most common, and it is thought they are the origin of this feature, which is mostly exclusive to the Northern and Southern quarters.
  • D'Birri: The various Birri tribes live west of the Debrji river that bisects the Northern Quarter. Birri bofin are noted for their wavy, red and brown hair, as well as their habit of carving and dying intricate patterns into their side-horns.
  • Tas'ittajn: Bofin who originally migrated from the Southern Quarter. The Tas bofin share many traits with the Ittajn they're descended from, with heavy influences from the Choks and D'Birri they have intermingled with, the first trait leaving being the small size common to most Ittajn bofin. Otherwise, they retain the heightened aggression, thick fur, as well as the distinctly sharp teeth for meat consumption.
  • Tellak: Inhabitants of the Kokan island, this unique tribe does bear some Ittajn traits, but otherwise resemble Tampera bofin with brilliant blue keratin and white hair.

Southern Quarter: South of the Blackrock river, the southern quarter is home to the harshest terrains, with a massive, sandy desert to its north, and blistering tundras to the south. The bofin here tend to be extremely short, but also have a heavy preference for meat.

  • Dou-ma-yorr: Bofin of the central plains within the Southern Quarter. These bofin are fierce defenders of their fertile land, caught between two different types of desert. Dou-ma bofin tend toward larger sizes, with the largest females and halfs in the world.
  • Nansuu: Bofin of the northern desert. They are nomadic, and among the only bofin to tame animals extensively. Rumors and legends abound about how there are some tribes of Nansuu who can subsist off of raw psychic energy, and can drain emotions and memories in order to feed. However, most records show them merely having domesticated the animal-like plants known as Gorgran that both graze the sparse grasses and photosynthesize with the desert sun.
  • Ittajn: Known as the Tundran bofin, these bofin are both highly aggressive and extremely short, with thick nails for digging through ice and snow. With thick fur and pale skin and eyes, Ittajn bofin usually have strikingly colored fur and keratin, with little limit on color for these features. They are known for their large appetites and ability to consume even raw meat without risk, as well as their sometimes cannibalistic tendencies in regards toward sotoljga. Ittajn bofin have an unusually high prevalence of hoof-hands, and this mutation is only found in those of Ittajn descent.

Approximate total population, rounded down: 1.8 billion as of 1950, with roughly 65% remaining on their homeworld.

Approximate tech level at the time of interstellar contact: Late Bronze age, early iron age. Unusually high medical technology, poor animal husbandry.
